handcuff_police_Polizei_264012_l The man was caught late at night stealing from a German supermarket.  The thief escaped but was still handcuffed.  The man then ran to the local police station to have to cuffs removed.

"It was stupid of him," said a police spokesman said.

"They took the cuffs off but they kept him."

I’m not really sure he would have ever gotten the cuffs off anyway.  I think he was just getting his inevitable capture over with.

A Pizza Hut delivery driver with a valid handgun permit has been fired after he shot an armed robber who put a gun to his head and demanded he turn over his cash. Now a Iowa state senator is calling for a boycott of Pizza Hut:

"You tell me any Iowan that was in his situation, that had a gun put to his head, how they would’ve reacted differently," state Sen. Brad Zaun of Urbandale said. "I think it’s the wrong decision by Pizza Hut and I will not be buying any more Pizza Hut products."

Pizza Hut says it’s against company policy for delivery drivers to carry guns, even with a valid permit.

A bank teller pregnant with twins was shot in the stomach during a robbery Tuesday morning, and police were questioning two teenagers as “persons of interest.”

Indianapolis police spokesman Lt. Jeff Duhamell said the teller, who is five months pregnant, was in serious to critical condition but was alert when taken to a hospital.

“This is senseless. Some poor lady, trying to make a living, pregnant, shot by a man without any provocation,” said Indianapolis Police Chief Michael Spears. Continue reading »

The Sibley County Sheriff says that a man who accidentally shot and killed his 9-year-old son while they were hunting apparently mistook the boy for a turkey.

Sheriff Bruce Ponath says that Anthony Klaseus of Belle Plaine and his son Hunter were hunting turkey about three miles west of Belle Plaine around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when Klaseus shot his son in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Klaseus dialed 911 on his cell phone. Emergency responders pronounced the boy dead at the scene.

"He was absolutely panicked. That would be an understatement," Ponath said. "Very distraught."

Ponath said the shooting was an accident but that his department is continuing to investigate the circumstances.

toddlertoker Two people have been charged for corrupting or endangering a child after police say the videotaped a toddler as they forcibly made it smoke marijuana.

Police received the video of the toddler on Monday.

According to federal court records, the videotape shows 18-year-old Melvin Blevins of Pataskala, holding a marijuana pipe to the mouth of the child. The child, who turned two this month, was not identified.

Earlier this month, 16-year-old Angel Dailey pleaded not guilty to charges of corrupting and endangering the child.

Police said Dailey was holding the toddler, who can be seen on the tape squirming to avoid the pipe. Police learned of the tape after a Columbus, Ohio pawn shop dealer found it in a camcorder.

A voice in the video says, "It is some good stuff," as a hand gives the choking toddler water.

In March, Blevins was indicted in a drug bust that police said included more than $3 million in cash and more than a ton of marijuana.
Pataskala Ohio Police Chief Chris Forshey says, "They were going through the hard drive on the camera, and came across the video images."
Police say the video shows an unidentified woman holding the toddler as an off camera man gives the toddler the pot pipe. The toddler inhales and then chokes on the pot, according to the video. After that, the video shows a man mimicking the toddler’s coughing.

Forshey says "You can tell that she’s inhaling some of it, and you can tell that she doesn’t want to. So it’s a pretty disgusting video."

SAN DIEGO – A homeless amputee was beaten to death with his own crutch Monday night on a downtown sidewalk.

Several witnesses reported that the 41-year-old victim had gotten into an argument with another man on F Street near Eighth Avenue in the Core-Columbia neighborhood just before midnight, homicide Lt. Kevin Rooney said.

During the fight the man picked up the victim’s crutch and hit him with it, said Rooney.

Paramedics tried to revive him but he died about a hour later at a trauma center.

The attacker was described as Latino and in his 30s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 170 pounds with a mustache and a sparse beard, Rooney said.

He was last seen near Seventh Avenue and G Street.

Police said they don’t know why the men were arguing, if they knew each other or the motive for the attack.
The dead man’s name has not yet been released. Rooney said he had an amputated leg and used a wheelchair but also was able to stand. He was standing when he was hit with the crutch, he said.

The man was known to stay in an alcove in front of the building where the fight took place.

Anyone with information is asked to call homicide detectives at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.

A Yemeni court ordered the marriage of an eight-year-old girl terminated on Tuesday because she had not reached puberty.

The court also ordered the child’s family to pay about $250 in compensation to the 30-year-old ex-husband.

The girl’s lawyer and human rights activist Shatha Nasser said the minor had filed a suit in April asking for divorce and told the court that her husband had been physically abusing her and forcing her to have "sex with him after hitting her."

One of the people attending the trial volunteered to pay the compensation, the lawyer said, but did not explain the reason why the court ordered the compensation.

The ruling terminated the marriage instead of granting a divorce to prevent the husband from seeking to reinstate the marriage, according to the lawyer.

Many minor girls in Arab countries that observe tribal traditions are married to older husbands but not before puberty. Such marriages are also driven by poverty in countries like Yemen, one of the poorest countries outside Africa.

verizonIn what has to be the saddest cellphone-related story ever, an 80-year-old man spent a part of every day listening to a voicemail recording of his deceased wife saying her name, "Catherine Whiting." Ever since her death in 2005, listening to the recording offered the man a small amount of comfort. However, when his service was upgraded earlier this year, the message was lost.

To compound the problem, the message was the only existing recording of his wife, so Mr. Whiting blamed Verizon for "taking her voice away." When Verizon got wind of the situation, they promptly restored the greeting from an archive while simultaneously restoring our faith that there might actually be humans behind our nation’s faceless wireless carriers.
